Luca Signorelli
Luca Signorelli was an Italian Renaissance painter who was a talented draftsman and used foreshortening. He was known for his massive frescos. This painting above is, "The Poet Virgil," as a detail from the Last Judgment cycle in the chapel of San Vrixio, 1499-1504. I like how detailed and intricate this painting is. I also enjoy the contrast from the surrounding bold gold to the poet, Virgil's lighter tone of color. The use of the white, pale blues and fleshy tones draws my attention to Virgil rather than the fine detail surrounding him. I think this contrast plays a unique role in Signorelli's painting.
