Contemporary Artist- Mary Reid Kelley
Mary Reid Kelley was born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1979. Her artwork adopts a stark black-and-white palette while synthesizing art-historical styles such as Cubism and German Expressionism. This piece of art that I chose is named Sisyphus on Staircase and it was created in 2011. It uses all the mediums of collage, acrylic, and watercolor on paper. I chose this piece because it was really creepy but extremely interesting. I also realized that it really reminded me of the mom in the movie Coraline. I like the eerieness of the drawing as well as the extensive detail in the dress. I also like the shading on the walls because it looks very ominous with the sign that says "silence".
