In 1972 David Hockney was commissioned to make a poster for the Munich Olympic games. This was the first of two posters he would be asked to make for the Olympics. This painting is very similar to many of his other works including pools and men. What I find really interesting is that Hockney has synesthesia where you see sound as colors and he tried to incorporate that into this work. He listened to the sound of the crowd cheering and the divers diving.
