Franz Marc

This painting is by the German painter Franz Marc. He did a lot of work with animals and abstract backgrounds. Many of his works were vibrant and full of color. The backgrounds aren’t simple and demonstrate a wide range of colors as well as shapes. Franz Marc was a founding member of Dee Blaue Reiter(“The Blue Rider) which was a German group of artists that had interests focused on abstract art. A big idea of this group was that art did not have to be “real” and that artists could dig deeper into realistic art by bringing about different colors and symbols. He often used animals as he thought they were a good symbol of rebirth which was what his group was all about; a different representation of “real”.
